In 2010, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration noted that 207 people were killed annually by vehicles backing over them without the drivers seeing anything in the rearview mirror. Additionally, nearly 15,500 people were injured in similar accidents.
Backup (rearview, or reverse) cameras provide an added element of safety for a driver by allowing them to see within the blind spot behind them. These are especially useful when backing up larger vehicles and trailers, for example, as the driver is aware of objects on the road, other vehicles, and people in the area.
Backup cameras not only save money by reducing minor accidents, they also save lives by allowing drivers to be more aware of children, small animals, or obstacles in their vicinity.
Don’t assume only commercial drivers need back up cameras! Back up cameras increase confidence in many drivers, especially those who park in tight garages or parking lots, regularly back out into an active roadway, live in communities with children at play, or simply don’t have a whole lot of experience.
